Removing Scratches From Glass Balustrading
Glass balustrading is the contemporary safety fencing solution for your balcony, stairwells, patio, or pool. They look striking while allowing you to see through the sparkling, transparent panels. However, in order to keep the balustrades looking brand new, you need to do some sort of regular maintenance. In addition to cleaning them up, you have to watch out for scratches on the glass's surface. Not only do scratches look unpleasant but in the long term, they can weaken the structure of the balustrade.
No need to worry though because light to moderate scratches can be repaired without replacing the panels with expensive brand-new ones. Here are several easy steps on how to remove scratches.
1. See if the damage is a light or moderate scratch. To do this, run a fingernail over the glass surface. If your nail does not fall into the groove of the scratch, then the blemish is a light scratch. If your nail's edge falls into the groove, the panel has incured a moderate scratch.
2. For light scratches, apply a considerable amount of toothpaste along the length of the mark. Toothpaste contains an abrasive compound that smoothes out the microscopic edges of the scratch. Use moderate pressure and a circular motion to rub the toothpaste, using a lint-free cloth, along the glass. Do not stop rubbing until the scratch disappears. Polish the damaged area with a dry, clean, lint-free cloth.
3. If the scratch still remains, apply a thin coat of furniture polish and buff the scratch through. Lastly, apply a thin layer of transparent liquid floor wax to add sparkle.
4. For moderate scratches, first apply toothpaste as stated above. While waiting for the toothpaste to dry, make a homemade polishing compound by mixing equal parts of vinegar and mustard. Apply the paste as you do with the toothpaste method then polish the glass with a clean lint-free cloth.
5. If the scratch is still visible, you need to treat it with a professional scratch-cleaning kit. Automotive glass repair kits typically have the compounds that can repair the blemish, but they are quite costly. Additionally, you should know how to use them for safety and maximum effectiveness.
