Jewelry Boxes Women Find Beautiful: Exquisite Wood Inlay Using Zebrawood

Handcrafted wooden boxes have always held a certain fascination for women, and are in much demand especially by those who love to collect trinkets. Different types of rare and exotic wood are used in marquetry, an art form involving exquisite wood inlay.

Zebrawood, with its amazing patterns and colors, make it very attractive for use in marquetry. Marquetry is an art form that is used to adorn the lids of wooden jewelry boxes to enhance their external appearance. The veneer and burl of various types of rare wood are intricately inlaid to get evocative designs and patterns.

Zebras cavorting in the wild, drinking water at streams, grazing peacefully in herds, are images that we see quite often on National Geographic. On the other hand, Zebrawood, is not something that can be found easily. It is a very rare wood that grows only in central parts of Africa like the Congo, Cameroon, and Gabon. Its striking resemblance to the zebra, with the very dark thin stripes on a light background, is how it got its name.

Zebrawood comes from the species Microberlina brazzavillensis and goes by several different names: African Zebrawood, Allenele, Amouk, and Zingana. The diameter of the tree ranges from 48” to 60” and mostly grows on banks of rivers.

Its heartwood reveals an extremely pale golden hue with thin very dark black and dark brown stripes. The sapwood too is very pale in color and the wood has a very coarse texture. The wood is susceptible to insects as it is highly resistant to treatment with preservatives.

The grains of this very heavy hardwood are closely interlocked and clearly defined making it quite tough to carve or cut. The quartersawn wood is absolutely delightful to look at with its exuberant colors and diverse patterns. It also does not dry easily and exudes a rather foul odor when it is cut.

The Zebrawood veneer especially is very fragile and extra care has to be taken to prevent breakage. But with hand and power tools, it can be worked quite easily. Using a belt sander will give a very smooth machine finish.
